Mantle clocks come in all shapes and sizes. For the purposes of this web site, Mantle clocks are time keepers designed to sit on a shelf or fireplace mantle. A representation is presented below.

Black Marble Mantle Clock

Description: General name for a shelf clock with a predominantly black case made of marble, slate, onyx, or painted wood or iron.

 

Figural (Statue) Clock

Description: A clock that features a figure of some type as the main focus of its design. Often statues portray figures from myth or are of historical significance. Garnitures are statue clocks that include covered urns, tazzas, candlesticks, or candelabra as side elements

Gingerbread  Clock

Description: American made clock that was inexpensive and made in great numbers in the last part   of the 19th century. Commonly found in middle and lower class homes.

 

OG or Ogee American Clock

Description: American made clock popular in the 19th century. The OG refers to the distinctive S-shape or wave-like molding which frames the front of the rectangular case. Commonly has a glass front, highly decorated with reverse painting or etching.

Description: Also known as Napoleon's hat, camelback, or humpback clock because of its shape, which is rounded in the middle, tapering to flat on each side.
